Install Chrome on Windows step by step
Follow these five steps for a clean first-time install. Keep your network connected while the online installer finishes downloading the full package.
Start the Windows download
Use the primary Download Windows button on this page. The file ChromeSetup.exe is a small bootstrap installer. Save it to your Downloads folder so you can find it quickly.
Run the setup file
Double-click ChromeSetup.exe. If Windows SmartScreen asks for confirmation, choose Run or More info → Run anyway when you trust the source you selected. Stay online so the installer can fetch remaining components.
Wait for files to install
A progress window appears while Chrome copies files and configures defaults. Do not power off the PC. On slower connections, this step may take a few minutes longer than on a fast network.
Launch and set defaults (optional)
When installation completes, Chrome opens. You may be asked to set Chrome as the default browser and to sign in. Default browser status is optional —you can change it later in Windows Settings —Apps —Default apps.
Sign in and restore your data

Notes for Mac, Android, and iOS
Desktop Mac installs use a package file. Mobile installs go through the store for your platform, which keeps updates automatic.
Download the macOS package
Click Download macOS to get googlechrome.pkg. The package supports current Apple Silicon and Intel Macs. Save it to Downloads, then open it from Finder.
Complete the Mac installer
Follow the on-screen wizard and enter your Mac password when asked. After install, open Chrome from Applications. If Gatekeeper blocks the package, open System Settings —Privacy & Security and allow the installer you just ran.
Optional: set Chrome as default on Mac
Open System Settings → Desktop & Dock (or General → Default web browser on some versions) and choose Google Chrome. You can also accept the prompt inside Chrome after first launch.
Mobile notes for Android and iOS
On Android, install from Google Play so updates arrive with your other apps. On iPhone or iPad, use the App Store button above. After install, sign in to sync desktop bookmarks. On iOS, Chrome uses the system web engine; feature parity differs slightly from desktop, but sync still connects your library across devices.
Tip for mixed-device households
Install Chrome on every device you use daily, then enable sync once. Bookmarks added on a phone appear on your laptop after a short refresh. If sync stalls, check that you are signed into the same account and that the device is online.

Why is the Windows file only about 1.8 MB?
ChromeSetup.exe is an online installer. It downloads the remaining browser files during setup. Keep your internet connection active until the progress window closes.
Windows SmartScreen blocked the installer. What now?
SmartScreen sometimes warns on newly downloaded executables. Confirm you started the download from this page’s Windows button, then use More info → Run anyway if you choose to continue. Scan the file with Windows Security if you prefer an extra check.
Do I need administrator rights?
Many Windows installs request elevation for a system-wide install. If you lack admin rights, ask your IT contact or try a user-level install if your environment allows it.
Can I keep Edge or Firefox installed too?
Yes. Installing Chrome does not remove other browsers. You can keep multiple browsers and set a default in your operating system settings whenever you like.
How do I verify the version after install?
Open Chrome, open the menu, then Help → About Google Chrome. The page shows the current version and applies any pending update. Compare it with the changelog above if you want to confirm you are near the latest stable line.
Install failed midway. What should I try?
Check free disk space, disable temporary VPN issues if downloads stall, and run the setup again. Temporarily pause aggressive third-party antivirus if it quarantines the bootstrap file, then re-enable protection afterward.
